Dutch people are cycling more and farther

The bicycle has long been an iconic symbol of the Netherlands, and its popularity continues to grow. According to the latest edition of ‘Mobiliteit in Cijfers Tweewielers 2024’, compiled by RAI Vereniging and BOVAG, Dutch people are cycling more frequently and covering longer distances. This trend is largely driven by the rise of the electric bike (e-bike), which is revolutionizing bicycle use and the two-wheeler market.

An impressive growth in cycling
Since 2010, the number of bicycles in the Netherlands has increased from 22.3 million to 24.1 million. The use of these bicycles has also risen significantly. In 2023, Dutch cyclists collectively covered 19.1 billion kilometers, averaging 1,065 kilometers per person. By comparison, in 2013, this figure was 902 kilometers per person. This growth is largely attributed to the popularity of e-bikes, which make it easier to travel longer distances.

The electric bike
Of the 804,101 new bicycles sold in 2023, 56 percent were e-bikes. This translates to 453,219 electric bikes purchased, highlighting the crucial role this innovation now plays in the daily lives of many Dutch people. The average purchase price of a bike rose to €1,815, a 2 percent increase compared to 2022. While total bicycle sales fell slightly by 6 percent, market revenue remained stable due to the growing demand for and higher prices of e-bikes.

The Netherlands leading in Europe
Together with Germany and France, the Netherlands is one of Europe’s frontrunners in electric bike adoption. This underscores the innovative strength of Dutch cycling culture and consumers’ willingness to invest in sustainable mobility solutions.

Why cycling remains popular
The growing popularity of cycling is not only due to technological advancements like the e-bike but also to the fact that it is a practical, affordable, and environmentally friendly mode of transport. It aligns perfectly with the increasing focus on sustainability and a healthy lifestyle.

The future of the two-wheeler market
With a total of 26.2 million two-wheelers – including bicycles, mopeds, scooters, and motorcycles – the Netherlands demonstrates the importance of these vehicles in daily life. The expectation is that the rise of bicycles, particularly e-bikes, will only continue in the coming years.
